Walk-Offs Doom Softball at Lasell
NEWTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College softball team suffered a pair of walk off losses against Lasell University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division action on Saturday at Taylor Field, dropping the opener 3-2, before suffering a 5-3 setback in game two.
The Mariners (14-17-1, 7-7 GNAC) return to action on Monday, April 20, with a GNAC twin bill at Albertus Magnus College.
Game 1 – Lasell 3, Mitchell 2
Mitchell struck first in the opening inning, as junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) scored on an RBI groundout by senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) to give the Mariners an early 1–0 lead.
The Mariners added an insurance run in the seventh, capitalizing on a Lasell error to extend the advantage to 2–0.
Lasell responded in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of defensive miscues to rally for three runs and secure the walk-off victory.
Mitchell was limited to four hits in the contest, with Battersby leading the way with two, including a double and a run scored. Senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) also recorded a double, while DeCicco drove in a run.
In the circle, DeCicco took the loss despite allowing just one earned run on eight hits over 6.0 innings while striking out four.
Lasell finished with eight hits, with Emily Stilwell driving in the tying run, while the winning run came on a Mitchell error.
Game 2 – Lasell 5, Mitchell 4
Mitchell struck first in the opening inning, using a sacrifice fly from junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) to take an early lead. Lasell answered in the bottom half and later grabbed a 2–1 advantage in the third before the Mariners evened things up in the fifth on an RBI walk by Zoe Battersby.
The game remained deadlocked into extra innings, with Lasell briefly pulling ahead in the ninth before Mitchell responded in the 10th, capitalizing on a passed ball to tie the game at 3–3.
Lasell answered in the bottom of the 10th, stringing together back-to-back RBI singles to walk off with the victory.
Battersby led the Mariners offensively with two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored, while Clancy added an RBI. Olivia DeCicco chipped in a double, and Mitchell drew five walks in the contest.
In the circle, freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) turned in a strong performance, allowing five runs (three earned) on 11 hits over 9.1 innings while striking out five.
Lasell totaled 11 hits, with Ashlyn McCampbell leading the way with three hits and two RBI.
