Softball Earns Split at Albertus Magnus
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team kept its postseason hopes alive on Monday, splitting a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Albertus Magnus College. The Mariners dropped the opener, 2–1, before rebounding with a 4–2 victory in game two.
The Mariners (15-18-1, 8-8 GNAC) will conclude their non-conference schedule on Tuesday, April 21, with a pair of games against Salem State University.
Game 1 – Albertus Magnus 2, Mitchell 1
After seven scoreless innings, the Mariners broke through in the top of the eighth when senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) delivered an RBI single to center field to plate Madison Cole (Westbrook, Maine) for a 1–0 lead.
Albertus Magnus responded in the bottom half, tying the game on an RBI groundout before walking it off on an RBI double by Reilly Austin to secure the victory.
Mitchell was limited to four hits in the contest, with DeCicco accounting for the lone RBI. Junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.), junior Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.), and senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) each added a hit.
In the circle, DeCicco turned in a strong performance despite the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over 7.2 innings while striking out five.
Albertus Magnus finished with five hits, with Austin driving in the game-winning run. Annabelle Jabs earned the win, tossing a complete-game effort for the Falcons.
Game 2 – Mitchell 4, Albertus Magnus 2
Mitchell jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning on an RBI single from DeCicco and a run-scoring groundout by Clancy. The Mariners added two more in the second, taking advantage of walks and a wild pitch to build a 4–0 advantage.
Albertus Magnus chipped away in the sixth, scoring a pair of runs, but Mitchell limited the damage and held on for the win.
The Mariners totaled six hits in the contest, with DeCicco driving in a run and freshman Emma Boisseau (East Providence, R.I.) contributing two hits.
In the circle, freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) earned the victory, allowing two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings while striking out three.
Albertus Magnus finished with five hits, with Amelia Ovalles and Karla Carangelo each recording an RBI.
