Softball Drops a Pair to Salem State
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team closed out their non-conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon, suffering a sweep at the hands of Salem State University, 9-4 then 9-6.
The Mariners (15-20-1, 8-8 GNAC) will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, April 25, with a pair of GNAC games at New England College.
Game 1 – Salem State 9, Mitchell 4
Salem State built an early lead, scoring once in the first and adding two more in the second to take a 3–0 advantage. The Vikings broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating four runs to extend the lead to 7–0.
Mitchell responded in the bottom half of the inning, cutting into the deficit with three runs. Junior Zoe Battersby (West Warwick, R.I.) delivered a two-run double, and senior Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to make it 7–3.
Salem State answered with two more runs in the sixth to push the margin to 9–3, while the Mariners added a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from freshman Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.).
DeCicco led Mitchell at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Battersby drove in two runs. Senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Madison Cole (Westbrook, Maine) each scored a run in the contest.
In the circle, DeCicco took the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 14 hits over 7.0 innings while striking out five.
Salem State finished with 14 hits, with Tara Perryman recording three hits and two RBI and Hailey Ano driving in three runs.
Game 2 – Salem State 9, Mitchell 6
Salem State jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three runs in the first inning on a three-run home run by Ellie Kleinheinz. The Vikings added three more in the third to extend the advantage to 6–1.
The Mariners answered with a five-run third inning to even the score. Senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) sparked the rally, while junior Haley Westfal (La Habra, Calif.) delivered an RBI double and sophomore Luisa Delgado (Bridgeport, Conn.) added an RBI double to cap the comeback and make it 6–6.
Salem State regained control in the sixth inning, plating three runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Kleinheinz, to pull back in front for good.
Mitchell finished with seven hits in the contest, with senior Kaylee Drago (Danbury, Conn.) leading the way with two. Roman added a triple and scored twice, while Westfal and Delgado each drove in a run.
In the circle, freshman Tess Frager (Saco, Maine) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs over 3.0 innings. Starter Arianna Drouin (Swanzey, N.H.) allowed six runs over the first three innings.
Salem State totaled 10 hits, with Kleinheinz leading the way with three, including a home run and two doubles, while driving in five runs.
