NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Mitchell College baseball team powered to 19-0 and 23-2 wins over Lesley University on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.
The Mitchell offense exploded for 42 runs on 37 hits in the doubleheader. Dougie DelaCruz went 6-for-8 with three doubles, six RBI and five runs scored to lead the way. Steve Cochrane went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and five RBI while Jakari Pellegrini went 4-for-7 with two doubles and four RBI.
The Mariners also got solid pitching performances in both contests. Eddie Kaftan and Sam Majewski each picked up their first wins of the season. Kaftan (1-0 overall) allowed only one hit over 5.0 scoreless innings and struck out seven while walking two. Majewski (1-1 overall) surrendered two runs on four hits and fanned seven over 5.0 innings.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series with a doubleheader in New London on Sunday at noon.
Game 1 - Mitchell 19, Lesley 0
Mitchell opened the series with five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Pellegrini and Hunter Yaworski each knocked in runs with doubles while Lelo Martinez and Matt Falk plated runs with sacrifice flies.
The Mariners added two runs in the second on a double by DelaCruz and a single by Cochrane. In the third, DelaCruz was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Cochrane followed with a walk to make it 9-0.
Mitchell sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth and pushed across seven more runs to bust the game open. Anthony Laureano had a two-run single in the frame, and Yaworski capped the rally with a single for his third RBI of the game.
The Mariners went to their bench later in the game, and even the reserves got into the swing of things. Lucca Ardovini-Brooker, Owen Robbins and Jared Whitby all picked up RBI in the seventh as Mitchell extended the lead to 19-0.
Kaftan and relievers Robbie Roles and Kevin Vining wouldn't need the extra run support. Mitchell pitching allowed only one hit in the contest and didn't allow a runner past second base. Roles struck out one batter while Vining fanned two, and neither yielded a hit.
Game 2 - Mitchell 23, Lesley 2
The Mariners once again vaulted out to an early lead, as a two-run triple by Martinez helped stake the visitors to a 3-0 advantage. Lesley got a run back in the bottom of the frame, but Mitchell matched that in the second and then put up three in the fourth thanks to back-to-back doubles by DelaCruz and Cochrane.
Mitchell led 8-2 heading into the sixth but poured it on late, scoring eight runs in the sixth and seven more in the seventh. Seven different players knocked in a run in the sixth, with DelaCruz doing so twice in two separate at bats. Ardovini-Brooker and David Appelbaum each drove in runs in the seventh, although the big highlight came in the form of a grand slam by Robbins to complete the scoring. The homer was the first of his collegiate career, and he finished the game with a season-high five RBI.
Bryce Bedard and Connor Dulin were both sharp in one-inning relief stints. Bedard struck out two batters in the sixth while Dulin set down three in the seventh.
