Baseball Takes Two at Elms
HOLYOKE, Mass. -- The Mitchell College baseball team picked up a pair of wins over Elms College on Saturday afternoon, posting final scores of 5-0 and 6-3 in New England Collegiate Conference action at Mackenzie Stadium.
Mitchell starter Jakari Pellegrini tossed a gem in the opener, going the distance to post his second shutout of the season. The Mariners supplied him with five runs on 10 hits as Jeremy Sagun and Matt Falk each contributed two hits and knocked in a run.
Mitchell overcame a 3-0 deficit in the nightcap, scoring six unanswered runs in support of starter Camren Varney. Hunter Yaworski homered and drove in a pair of runs, while Dougie DelaCruz and Anthony Diaz also knocked in two apiece.
Mitchell (19-6 overall, 12-2 NECC) will complete the weekend series with a doubleheader in New London on Sunday, May 2 at noon. The Mariners need one more win to secure the top seed for the upcoming NECC Championship.
Game 1 -- Mitchell 5, Elms 0
Sagun and DelaCruz had RBI singles in the third inning to give Mitchell a 2-0 advantage. The Mariners padded the margin with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI double from Falk and an RBI single by Steve Cochrane.
Pellegrini cruised through every inning but the fourth, where Elms got a runner to third base with one out following an error. The senior left-hander pitched his way out of trouble, striking out the next two batters to keep the Blazers off the scoreboard. He finished the day with seven punch outs and allowed only four hits, improving to 5-3 on the year.
Game 2 -- Mitchell 6, Elms 3
Elms drew first blood in the second game, pushing across three runs in the second inning. Mitchell bounced back the next inning with four runs to snatch away the lead. DelaCruz got things started with a two-run double, and Diaz followed with a two-run single to make it 4-3. DelaCruz picked up his 100th career RBI in the frame, reaching the milestone in just his 75th game.
Yaworski tacked on a two-run homer in the fifth inning, his sixth of the season. All of his home runs have come in league action, and he is now tied for the team lead with DelaCruz.
Varney settled in after the second and didn't allow a runner past first base over the next three innings. Connor Dulin took the ball in relief in the sixth and brought the Mariners home, retiring all six batters he faced. Varney, who improved to 3-0, yielded three runs on seven hits and struck out five.
