Falcons Drop Men’s Basketball in GNAC Battle
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team was defeated by a final score of 104-75 against Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at The Nest.
Five Falcons scored in double-figures, as Ray Ford, Jr. led the balanced scoring attack for Albertus with 17 points and four rebounds. The two teams had five ties and exchanged the lead four times over the first 5:01 of the game, before Albertus used an 11-0 run to pull ahead 25-13. The Falcons controlled the game from there on, building a 17-point advantage at halftime and leading by as much as 30 points down the stretch.
Senior Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.) paced the Mariners with a game-high 26 points. The second leading scorer in the conference also added a team-best nine rebounds, while junior Eddie Volkerts also finished in double-figures scoring, netting 13 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
Albertus had the hot hand on offense, shooting 51.4% from the floor compared to 42.3% for Mitchell. The Falcons also won the rebounding battle, 45-35, and forced 21 Mariner turnovers.
The Mariners (9-5, 1-2 GNAC) will return home and look to right the ship when they host Regis College in a GNAC game on Saturday, January 18, at 3:00 pm. The Falcons (7-8, 3-1 GNAC) will stay home and host Saint Joseph's College (ME) on Saturday, January 18, at 3:00 pm.
