Volkerts Named GNAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
WINTHROP, Mass. – Mitchell College junior Eddie Volkerts (New London, Conn.) has been named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week for the sport of men's basketball, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.
It was a dominant week for Volkerts, who averaged 29 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, helping guide the Mariners to a 2-0 record in GNAC play. Volkerts added three steals and 2.5 assists per contest, while shooting 69.4% (25-36) from the floor.
The New London native began the week by posting a double-double in Mitchell's road victory over Anna Maria College. In the win, Volkerts finished with 29 points (12-18), 12 rebounds, three steals, and two assists, while also sealing the win for Mitchell with a buzzer beating layup in overtime. Volkerts was right back at it on Saturday, scoring 29 points (13-18) and grabbing 13 rebounds, guiding the Mariners past New England College. Against the Pilgrims, he added three steals and dished out three assists.
Entering the new week, Volkerts ranks second in the conference in both total rebounds (191) and rebounds per game (9.1), is fifth in points per game (18.5), and has posted nine double-doubles, which is tied for first in the GNAC.
