Men’s Basketball Slated to Open GNAC Tournament on Monday
NEW LONDON, Conn. – After finishing the regular season with a 6-8 record in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, the Mitchell College men's basketball team earned the ninth-seed in the 2025 GNAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. As a result, the Mariners will travel to face eighth-seeded Elms College in the Play-In Round on Monday, February 24, with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
The berth in the GNAC Tournament is a first for Mitchell and comes during the program's second season as a member of the conference. The Mariners finished the regular season with a 14-11 overall record, yet dealt with injuries during February, and will enter Monday on a four-game losing skid. Mitchell went 8-3 at home, 3-8 on the road, and were 3-0 on a neutral court.
Mitchell and Elms met once during the regular season, with the Blazers hanging on for a 66-63 victory. In that game, the Mariners rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to tie the game in the final moments, but were unable to complete the comeback. The Blazers posted a 6-19 record during the regular season, with all six wins coming in GNAC play. Elms went 5-6 at home and 1-13 on the road.
The winner of Monday night's showdown will advance to the GNAC Quarterfinals, where they will face top-seeded Saint Joseph's College (ME) on the road on Tuesday, February 25, at 7:30 pm.
The four quarterfinal winners will earn the right to compete in the GNAC Semifinals, which are scheduled for Thursday, February 27. They will be competing for the opportunity to play in the GNAC Championship on Saturday, March 1. The winner of the GNAC Championship game will be named the 2025 GNAC Men's Basketball Champion and earn the league's automatic qualifier into the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship.
