Butler Nets 26 in Exhibition at Division I New Haven
WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior guard Troy Butler (Manchester, Conn.) poured in a game-high 26 points for the Mitchell College men's basketball team, as the Mariners hung tough early but eventually fell to the University of New Haven 92–69 in an exhibition against the Division I squad on Sunday afternoon.
The Mariners came out of the gate on fire, racing out to an early 11–2 lead, but New Haven recovered and closed the first half with a 17-point advantage, 54–37.
Butler paced the Mitchell offense, netting his 26 points on 9-for-18 shooting, knocking down a pair of threes and attacking the rim for six made free throws. Mitchell found additional sparks from its bench, particularly sophomore guard Luke Pavia (Bolton, Mass.), who delivered an efficient 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including two threes. Fellow sophomore Collin Jefferson (Orlando, Fla.) added eight points, while senior forward Brandon Lee (Stockton, Calif.) contributed six points and five rebounds in an active two-way effort.
Despite stretches of strong ball movement and seven made threes, the Mariners struggled to slow a New Haven attack that shot nearly 56 percent from the field and built its lead on the glass, outrebounding Mitchell 42–28.
Mitchell closed the afternoon shooting 43.5 percent overall and 41.2 percent from beyond the arc.
The Mariners (2–5, 0–0 GNAC) return home following the Thanksgiving holiday to host Rivier University on Tuesday, December 2, at 6:00 p.m.
