Men’s Basketball Edged by Lasell in GNAC Battle on Senior Day
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team came up just short in a back-and-forth contest, falling to Lasell University, 77–74, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Prior to the game, Mitchell honored its three senior student-athletes: Brandon Lee (Stockton, Calif.), Adam Gardner (North Charleston, S.C.), and David Stallworth (Stockton, Calif.).
Mitchell led early and held a narrow 35–34 deficit at halftime after shooting 50.0 percent from the field in the opening half. The Mariners briefly regained the advantage early in the second period before the Lasers found their rhythm, pushing their lead to double digits with 7:43 left and maintaining the edge down the stretch despite a late Mitchell rally.
The Mariners trimmed the deficit to three in the final minute on a three-pointer by freshman Jaxyn Beaudet (New London, Conn.) and a buzzer-beating basket by sophomore Abdul Mansaray (Jacksonville, Fla.) but could not complete the comeback.
Abdul Mansaray led Mitchell with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Brandon Lee added 10 points. David Stallworth contributed 10 points, and freshman Zaveyn Tate (Bristol, Conn.) chipped in eight points and three rebounds off the bench.
Lasell was paced by Che Hanks with 22 points, while Andy Madesko added 19 points and Esmer Madesko recorded 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Lasers shot 50 percent from the floor compared to 43.8 percent for the Mariners, while both squads shot 25 percent from beyond the arc. Lasell held a narrow 36–33 rebounding advantage, though Mitchell's bench provided a major lift, outscoring Lasell's reserves 36–15.
The Mariners conclude their season with an overall record of 8–17, including a 3–9 mark in conference play.
