Balanced Attack Lifts Men’s Basketball Past Coast Guard
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Five Mitchell College players scored in double figures as the Mariners rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Coast Guard Academy, 97–88, on Wednesday evening at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Mitchell trailed 51–45 at halftime after Coast Guard shot 52.8 percent from the field and built a lead as large as nine points in the opening half. The Mariners responded with a decisive effort after the break, erupting for 52 second-half points while shooting 53.3 percent from the field and controlling the boards to take command of the game.
Mitchell took the lead for good early in the second half on a fast-break basket by senior David Stallworth (Stockton, Calif.). The Mariners continued to build separation behind strong interior play and second-chance opportunities, stretching the lead to as many as 13 points in the final minutes.
Troy Butler (Manchester, Conn.) led the Mariners with 21 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Abdul Mansaray (Jacksonville, Fla.) added 17 points and eight boards. Senior Brandon Lee (Stockton, Calif.) recorded 11 points and six rebounds, and freshman Jaxyn Beaudet (Groton, Conn.) contributed 11 points and seven boards.
Stallworth provided a key lift off the bench with 12 points and seven assists to round out Mitchell's five players in double figures. Sophomore Collin Jefferson (Orlando, Fla.) also chipped in nine points.
Mitchell finished the game shooting 53.1 percent from the field and held advantages in rebounding (39–28), points in the paint (48–34), and second-chance points (23–5), while the bench contributed 32 points.
Coast Guard was led by Luke Farrell's 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Elijah Parent added 23 points and Jordan Frazer contributed 19 points and five rebounds.
The Mariners (8–16, 3–8 GNAC) will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, February 21, with a conference game against Lasell University.
