Men’s Basketball Falters Down the Stretch Against AMCATS
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's basketball team let a second-half lead slip away on Saturday afternoon, falling 91–86 to Anna Maria College in a non-conference contest at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners opened the game on a 7–0 run and led 46–43 at intermission behind 19 first-half points from junior Troy Butler (Manchester, Conn.). Mitchell extended the margin to eight early in the second half, but Anna Maria gradually erased the deficit with steadier half-court execution and timely perimeter shooting.
After trading punches down the stretch, the two squads found themselves knotted at 82–82 with just under four minutes remaining, before Logan Talbot sank a layup at the 3:20 mark to give Anna Maria the lead for good.
Butler finished with a game-high 26 points, while sophomore forward Abdul Mansaray (Jacksonville, Fla.) added 21 points and 15 rebounds—both collegiate career highs—along with three assists and a steal. Senior Brandon Lee (Stockton, Calif.) notched his third double-double of the season with 13 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and two steals, while sophomore Tommy Daly (Wethersfield, Conn.) chipped in 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
The AMCATS were led by Lucas Miglionico (20 points), Logan Talbot (14 points), and Joe Ingegneri (12 points), who fueled the comeback as Mitchell struggled at the foul line (17-for-30) despite shooting 50 percent from the floor.
The Mariners (2–6, 0–0 GNAC) return to their home court on Monday, December 8, for a non-conference game against GNAC foe Rivier University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
