Strong Second Half Propels Wentworth Past Women’s Lacrosse
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.) scored a career-high five goals for the Mitchell College women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, but the Mariners were outscored 8-1 in the second half, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology downed the Mariners, 17-7, in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
Jennings added three ground balls and five draw controls for the Mariners, while junior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) and sophomore Karissa Cotoia (Scituate, R.I.) each potted their first goals of the season. Senior Kyrsten Lucas (Manchester, MD) scooped a team-best four ground balls and caused one turnover in the loss.
After the Leopards opened the scoring in the first minute of play, the Jennings answered with back-to-back goals to give Mitchell an early lead. Two Wentworth goals in the span of a minute followed and put the visiting squad ahead for good, as the Mariners were unable to regain the lead. Jennings managed to tie the score at 3-3 on a free position shot with 9:43 remaining in the first period, but the Leopards scored four straight to close the stanza, and led 9-6 at halftime.
Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie finished with five goals and one assist for Wentworth, while Anna Faberlle and Sydney Vega each notched hat tricks in the win. Lily Cohen was the winning goalkeeper, turning away six shots.
Junior Arrianna Stark (Scotia-Glenville, N.Y.) made 13 saves in 60 minutes in goal for the Mariners.
The Mariners finished 13-20 on clear attempts, caused 15 turnovers, won nine draw controls, and got off 16 total shots. Wentworth tallied 35 shots and forced 21 Mitchell turnovers.
The Mariners (0-3, 0-2 GNAC) return to conference play on Saturday, March 22, with an away game at Albertus Magnus College. The Leopards (4-2, 0-0 CNE) play next on Saturday, March 22, at home against Salem State University.
