Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Road Contest at Rivier
NASHUA, N.H. – Despite scoring the first goal of the game on Wednesday evening, the Mitchell College women's lacrosse team was defeated by a final of 18-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road contest by Rivier University at Joanne Merrill Field.
The Mariners struck first, as sophomore Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.) scored the game's first goal at the 12:57 mark in the opening quarter, but that was all the offense Mitchell was able to muster against the Raiders. Rivier responded with nine unanswered goals in the frame and built a 13-1 advantage by halftime.
Jennings finished with one goal on four shots, adding four draw controls, and three ground balls. Junior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) chipped in two ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers for Mitchell.
Sarah Lachance led the offensive attack for Rivier, potting six goals and assisting on five others. Sofia Cebrero added a hat trick and one assist. Rivier outshot Mitchell 35-4 while holding advantages in ground balls (27-11) and draw controls (15-7). Defensively, Rivier forced 26 turnovers while committing only 13.
Junior Arrianna Stark (Scotia-Glenville, N.Y.) logged all 60 minutes in goal and turned away nine shots. Rachel Hinkley started and played the first half between the irons for Rivier, picking up the win without recording a save but allowing one goal.
The Mariners (1-6, 1-4 GNAC) are back in action at home on Saturday, April 5, with a GNAC tilt against Lasell University at 3:00 pm. The Raiders (6-3, 5-1 GNAC) return to action on Saturday, April 5, with a GNAC road matchup against New England College.
