Women’s Lacrosse Rallies, Falls Late to Albertus Magnus
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team battled back from an early deficit but ultimately fell to Albertus Magnus College, 12–9, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday morning at Alumni Field.
The Mariners opened strong, scoring three of the first four goals of the game. Junior Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.) netted two early goals, while senior Halie Jennings (New London, Conn.) added another to give Mitchell a 3–1 lead late in the first quarter.
Albertus Magnus responded in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 5–3 lead into halftime.
Mitchell surged in the third quarter, erupting for five goals to regain the advantage. Senior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) scored three times during the run, while Chloe Jennings added two more goals as the Mariners carried an 8–7 lead into the final period.
After Mitchell extended its lead to 9–7 early in the fourth, Albertus Magnus closed the game with five unanswered goals to secure the comeback victory.
Chloe Jennings led the Mariners with five goals and an assist while also posting a team-high 18 shots. Cordero added three goals and an assist, and Halie Jennings contributed a goal.
Mitchell held a slight edge in shots (29–27), while Albertus Magnus finished with a 24–17 advantage in ground balls and won 12 of 23 draw controls.
In goal, senior Arrianna Stark (Schenectady, N.Y.) made nine saves over 60 minutes of action.
Albertus Magnus was led by Sage Sonsini with four goals, while Tiffanie Ly and Jamily Carter each added three. Victoria McDermott played the entire game in goal and turned away 12 shots.
The Mariners (0–3, 0–2 GNAC) return to action on Wednesday, March 25, when they host Rivier University in a GNAC contest scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
