Women’s Lacrosse Drops Close GNAC Contest to Dean
FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team battled in a tightly contested game but came up just short in a 9–6 loss to Dean College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Monday afternoon at Grant Field.
Dean struck first with a pair of goals in the opening quarter before junior Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.) put the Mariners on the board with an unassisted tally to make it 2–1 after one.
Mitchell answered in the second quarter, as Jennings netted her second goal of the game and senior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) added a score to help the Mariners trim the deficit.
Jennings struck again later in the quarter, but Dean responded with three goals to take a 5–4 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs seized control in the third quarter, scoring four times to extend the advantage to 9–5. Cordero converted a free-position attempt for Mitchell's lone goal of the period.
Mitchell added a fourth-quarter goal from Jennings, but the comeback bid fell short as Dean held on for the conference victory.
Jennings led all scorers with four goals on 16 shots, including 10 on goal, while also adding five ground balls and three draw controls. Cordero chipped in two goals along with five ground balls and a team-high five draw controls.
In goal, senior Arrianna Stark (Schenectady, N.Y.) made seven saves while facing 16 shots on goal.
Dean was led by Bella McQuade, who finished with four goals, while Emma Mock added two goals and two assists.
Dean held advantages in shots (33–24) and ground balls (29–25), while Mitchell edged the Bulldogs in draw controls (9–8).
The Mariners (0–8, 0–7 GNAC) return home for their next contest on Wednesday, April 8, against the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), with first draw scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
