Women’s Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day Prior to GNAC Battle with NEC
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team was defeated by New England College, 25–1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Prior to the game, the Mariners honored their eight senior student-athletes: Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.), Arrianna Stark (Schenectady, N.Y.), Morgyn Perkins (Bristol, Conn.), Sarah Latch (Hempstead, N.H.), Halie Jennings (New London, Conn.), Madison Dunn (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Chelsea Jackson (East Hartford, Conn.), and Kiara Ampuero (New London, Conn.).
New England College controlled the contest from the opening draw, scoring 10 goals in the first quarter to take an early lead. The Pilgrims added six more in the second to carry a 16–0 advantage into halftime.
The Mariners broke through in the third quarter when Cordero shook off a string of defenders to tally Mitchell's lone goal of the game.
New England College continued to add on in the second half, outscoring Mitchell 9–0 over the final two quarters.
Cordero led Mitchell with one goal on six shots, including four on goal, while also contributing three ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Junior Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.) added two shots and a team-high six draw controls, while freshman Jay Minner (Milford, Conn.) collected three ground balls.
In goal, Stark got the start and made seven saves, while Minner recorded two saves in relief.
New England College was paced by Meadow Gilchrist, who finished with five goals and three assists, while Riley Davis added four goals.
The Pilgrims held advantages in shots (44–8), ground balls (21–14), and draw controls (18–10), controlling possession throughout the contest.
The Mariners (0-10, 0-9 GNAC) will play next at Lasell University on Tuesday, April 14, at 5:00 p.m.
