Women’s Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Battle at Albertus Magnus
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team pushed Albertus Magnus College to the limit on Tuesday night but came up just short in a five-set Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) thriller at The Nest. The Mariners fell by set scores of 18-25, 25-13, 25-20, 22-25, and 13-15.
Mitchell found its rhythm after dropping the opening frame, taking the next two sets. The Mariners hit .286 in the second set and .100 in the third while limiting the Falcons to negative percentages in both. Albertus regrouped in the fourth to force a decisive fifth set, where it edged Mitchell in a back-and-forth finish.
Sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) led the Mitchell attack with 13 kills, while fellow sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) followed closely with 10 kills and a team-high four service aces to go with 15.0 total points. Freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) added six kills and three digs, and freshman Miranda Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) contributed three kills and a solo block.
Junior setter Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) paced the offense with 19 assists and two aces, while senior Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) added 10 assists and three aces. Defensively, senior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the back row with a team-best 19 digs, and freshman Zoa Trammel (Rock Hill, S.C.) chipped in eight.
As a team, the Mariners finished with 40 kills, 12 aces, and 53 digs while holding the Falcons to a .121 attack percentage.
Majo Pelaez led the Falcons with 10 kills in the win, while Alexys Signor tallied 17 digs and Alyssa Valentine dished out 19 assists.
The Mariners (7-7 overall, 1-5 GNAC) return home for their next match, a non-conference clash against Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday, October 10, at 5 p.m.
