Women’s Volleyball Closes Season with Four-Set Battle at Bridgewater State
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team came out strong but ultimately fell in four sets (25–22, 11–25, 19–25, 21–25) to Bridgewater State University on Thursday evening at the Tinsley Center.
Mitchell opened the match on a high note, hitting an efficient .333 in the opening frame to take a 25–22 win. Sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) powered the Mariners' attack early, recording five kills in the first set as Mitchell limited Bridgewater State to just .242 hitting. Wordell finished with a match-high 20 kills, marking a new collegiate career high.
The Bears responded in the second set, but despite the setback, Mitchell pushed back in the third and fourth frames behind the steady play of freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) and senior Ali Ortiz (Groton, Conn.). Jenkins tallied nine kills and 10 digs, while Ortiz added five kills and two service aces.
Senior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) directed the offense with 19 assists, while junior Emily Rizzo (Bethel, Conn.) added nine helpers of her own. Defensively, Lent and junior Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) shared the team lead with 10 digs apiece, helping Mitchell post 60 total digs on the night.
As a team, Mitchell recorded 40 kills, seven service aces, and hit .095 overall, compared to Bridgewater's .226 attack percentage.
Bridgewater State was led by Lily Welch (13 kills, .357) and Charlotte Sullivan (eight kills, .538, five blocks), who helped the Bears close out the final two sets with strong play at the net.
The Mariners close the season with an overall record of 11–14, including a 3–10 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
