STANDISH, Maine – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team earned a split in Saturday's tri-match at Saint Joseph's College (Maine), picking up a non-conference three-set victory over Husson University before falling to the host Monks in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at the Harold Alfond Center.
The Mariners (8-10, 1-7 GNAC) return to action on Tuesday, October 21, with a GNAC matchup at Dean College at 7:00 p.m.
Match 1 – Mitchell 3, Husson 0
Mitchell earned a dominant 3-0 sweep over Husson University, winning by set scores of 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.
The Mariners hit .221 as a team and recorded 37 kills, led by sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.), who tallied a match-high 12 kills on a .321 hitting percentage. Fellow sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas) added 10 kills, 5 digs, and 2 aces in a strong all-around effort.
Junior Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) directed the offense with 12 assists, while senior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the defense with a match-high 22 digs.
Mitchell controlled the tempo early with a .370 hitting percentage in the opening set and showed poise to edge out close finishes in sets two and three.
Husson was led by Janna Preskorn with 9 kills and hit .160 as a team.
Match 2 – Saint Joseph's (ME) 3, Mitchell 0
In the second match of the day, Mitchell fell in straight sets to Saint Joseph's (ME), 25-16, 25-22, 25-14.
Sophomore Genna Hyde once again paced the attack with 6 kills, 2 aces, and 2 digs.
Veenstra contributed 3 kills on a .200 hitting percentage, while Lent added 9 digs and 5 assists.
The Monks hit .207 as a team and were led by Greta Mackintosh with 12 kills, while Emily Mendelson chipped in 8 kills and 6 service aces.
Saint Joseph's finished with 16 service aces and 34 assists, remaining unbeaten in GNAC play.
