NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team fell in both matches of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3–1 decision to Colby-Sawyer College before losing a five-set marathon to New England College at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners (9-12, 2-9 GNAC) will play their final home game of the season on Wednesday, October 29, against Anna Maria College in non-conference play.
Match 1: Colby-Sawyer 3, Mitchell 1
After dropping the first two sets, Mitchell found its rhythm in the third. The Mariners fought off multiple set points before closing out a 28–26 win to stay alive. The fourth set followed a similar pattern — tight rallies, long volleys, and steady defense — but the Chargers held on late to take the match.
Sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) powered the Mitchell offense, finishing with a collegiate career-high 19 kills and a strong .310 hitting percentage on 42 attempts. Fellow sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas) and freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) each added 10 kills, keeping the Mariners within striking distance throughout.
Setting duties were split evenly, with junior Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) and senior Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) each recording 18 assists. Senior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the back row with 22 digs, while Hyde contributed another 14.
Match 2: New England College 3, Mitchell 2
Hyde led the Mariners offensively with 15 kills on 54 attempts, adding 13 digs for a standout all-around performance. Jenkins also had a big day, posting a collegiate career-high 18 kills on 31 attempts with a .484 hitting percentage.
Setting duties were shared, with Veenstra recording 15 assists and Blankenship adding 19. Defensively, the back row was anchored by Lent, who tallied 29 digs, and Hyde, who added another 13, helping Mitchell stay competitive throughout the long match.
New England College was paced by Tyra Kelly, who posted 7 kills on 19 attempts with a .263 hitting percentage. Kaylee Montgomery added 6 kills, while Jamie Hansen contributed key serves. New England totaled 25 kills on 151 attempts for a .073 team hitting percentage.
