Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Anna Maria in Straight Sets
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team put together one of its most complete performances of the season on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Anna Maria College 3–0 (25–14, 25–7, 25–11) at Yarnall Athletic Center in a non-conference match.
The Mariners were dominant from start to finish, hitting .355 as a team while holding the AMCATS to just .014. Sophomore Genna Hyde (Cypress, Texas) led the way with 12 kills, a .545 hitting percentage, four aces, and seven digs. Senior setter Jenna Blankenship (Virden, Ill.) controlled the offense with 14 assists and also served up six aces to keep the pressure on.
Mitchell spread the offense around effectively, with sophomore Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) adding nine kills and two block assists, and freshman Kamila Ortiz-Plata (Groton, Conn.) going a perfect 5-for-5 for a 1.000 hitting percentage. Freshman Cimber Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) chipped in three kills, while senior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) anchored the defense with 12 digs.
The Mariners jumped out early with a 25–14 win in the opening set, then dominated the second set 25–7. They closed out the match in convincing fashion, 25–11, to secure the sweep on their home court.
The Mariners (10–12, 2–9 GNAC) return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday, November 1, when they compete in a tri-match with the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) and Elms College.
