Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Falcons in Friday Night Clash
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team scored the first 21 points of the game against Fisher College on Friday evening, dominating the Falcons from wire to wire en route to a 100–24 non-conference victory at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The game marked just the fifth time in the Division III era of the program that the Mariners have reached the 100-point mark, and it is the first time since scoring 103 points in a win over Lesley University during the 2022–23 season.
Mitchell controlled the game from the very beginning, jumping out to a 32–7 lead in the first quarter and never looking back. Freshman Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) led the way with a dominant all-around performance—25 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals. Off the bench, freshman Ariahna Headen (Rogers, Conn.) provided a big spark, scoring a collegiate career-high 15 points and grabbing 6 rebounds, while senior Nanda Sanchez (Houston, Texas) added 12 points and 7 boards inside.
Junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, Texas) contributed 11 points, 7 assists, and 6 steals, and sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas) chipped in 7 points and 8 assists.
The Mariners shared the ball well and shot efficiently, finishing at 55% from the field with 27 assists on 43 made baskets. Their defense was just as strong, holding Fisher to 20% shooting and forcing 33 turnovers, which turned into easy points in transition.
Kenuelys Velazquez led the Falcons with a team-high 16 points, including four made baskets from beyond the arc.
The Mariners (2–5, 0–0 GNAC) will return to the court on Wednesday, December 10, for a road game against Anna Maria College.
