Women’s Basketball Outlasts Dean in Overtime Thriller
FRANKLIN, Mass. – Junior guard Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) scored a career-high 29 points and freshman guard Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) added a career-high 26 points on Saturday afternoon, leading the Mitchell College women's basketball team to an 86-83 overtime win over Dean College in a non-conference showdown at Pieri Gymnasium.
Beddoe added five rebounds, Streitmatter pulled down nine boards, and freshman Jade Hypolite (Houston, TX) added a career-best 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals in the win, the second in a row for the Mariners.
The two teams traded punches during regulation, as the Bulldogs outscored the Mariners by six in the first quarter before Mitchell bested Dean by 10 in the second frame. The Mariners held a four-point edge entering the second half and a nine-point advantage with three quarters in the books. Leading 62-53 entering the final 10 minutes, the Mariners lead grew as large as 13 points after sophomore Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) made a layup with 5:50 on the clock.
Dean then peeled off a 14-0 run, taking the lead with 39 seconds remaining on a made basket by Kendrah Doane. Down two with the clock ticking, Mitchell knotted the score in the final seconds of regulation on a layup by freshman N'Tai Teague (Houston, TX), which sent the game to overtime.
The Bulldogs struck first in overtime, jumping ahead by five after a long-range basket by Tori Viau and a pair of free throws by Doane. Senior Kyrsten Lucas (Manchester, MD) converted on a layup to trim the Mitchell deficit to three with 2:18 left in the extra period, before a free throw by Beddoe made it a two-point game at 81-79. With 32 seconds on the clock, Hypolite went 1-2 at the free throw line, and after a team offensive rebound, Streitmatter connected from downtown to give the Mariners a lead that they would not relinquish. A trio of free throws by Hypolite in the waning moments helped the visiting squad withstand a basket by Dean in the final seconds, securing the second straight win for Mitchell after opening the season with back-to-back losses.
Mitchell shot just 32.9% from the floor and were outrebounded 69-54; however they forced 23 turnovers from Dean. Tori Viau led all scorers with 32 points for the Bulldogs, while Doane and Alexandria Paquet netted 16 points apiece.
The Mariners (2-2, 0-0 GNAC) return to play on Tuesday, December 10, when they travel across town for a non-league game against the Coast Guard Academy. The Bulldogs (5-4, 0-0 GNAC) will now break for the holiday, playing next on Thursday, January 2, at Nichols College.
