Women’s Basketball Comes Up Just Short Against Blue Jays
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team mounted a spirited second-half comeback but ultimately fell just short, dropping a 65–61 decision to the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners erased a 21-point deficit late in the second quarter and had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead in the final seconds, but USJ made timely free throws down the stretch to secure the road victory.
Mitchell struggled offensively in the opening half, shooting just 27 percent from the field and trailing 38–20 at the break. The Mariners responded with renewed energy after halftime, outscoring the Blue Jays 41–27 over the final two quarters while holding Saint Joseph's to just 27 points in the second half.
Sophomore Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) finished with a game-high 25 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range while playing all 40 minutes. Streitmatter sparked the comeback with a strong third quarter and continued to carry the offense in the fourth as Mitchell steadily chipped away at the deficit.
Sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas) delivered a strong all-around performance with 13 points and nine rebounds, while senior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) added nine points and eight rebounds. Junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, Texas) contributed six points and a team-high eight rebounds, and sophomore Luisa Delgado (Bridgeport, Conn.) provided a major boost off the bench with seven points, highlighted by two three-pointers that fueled the Mariners' fourth-quarter surge.
Mitchell opened the final period on a 10–2 run and later tied the game at 54–54 following a three-pointer by Delgado with 4:37 remaining. The Mariners pulled within one point on multiple occasions in the final minute, including a layup by Hypolite with 1:15 left that made it a 62–61 contest.
Saint Joseph's was paced by Sequoia Turcotte Briggs, who scored 25 points, while Maddy Evans added 10 points off the bench.
The Mariners finished the game shooting 33.3 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from beyond the arc, while forcing 14 turnovers and winning the fourth quarter 23–14.
Mitchell (2–11, 0–4 GNAC) will return to action on Saturday, January 25, with a conference game at New England College at 1:00 p.m.
