Late Effort Comes Up Short for Women’s Basketball
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team mounted a strong second-half push, highlighted by a 21-point third quarter, but Albertus Magnus College maintained control throughout to secure an 86–71 victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Albertus seized control in the opening half, building a 20–12 lead after one and extending the margin to 47–28 at halftime. The Falcons shot 45.7 percent in the first half and capitalized on 10 Mitchell turnovers, turning them into 12 points while also holding a 13–2 edge in second-chance scoring through the first 20 minutes.
Mitchell responded with its strongest stretch in the third quarter, outscoring Albertus 21–20. Senior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) sparked the run with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer, while sophomore Luisa Delgado (Bridgeport, Conn.) converted two fast-break layups to trim the deficit to 12 at 37–49 midway through the period. Sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas) later knocked down a three and converted four straight free throws in the final minute of the quarter as the Mariners cut the margin to 49–67 entering the fourth.
In the final period, Mitchell continued to fight. A layup by Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) helped pull the Mariners within 14 at 58–72 with 7:40 remaining. However, Albertus answered with timely baskets, preventing the Mariners from drawing closer.
Hypolite led Mitchell with 24 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Beddoe added 19 points, connecting on four three-pointers, while Streitmatter finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Mitchell shot 32.8 percent from the field and 10-of-39 (25.6 percent) from three-point range but was strong at the line, converting 17-of-20 free throws (85 percent). Albertus held advantages in points in the paint (38–18) and second-chance points (16–4).
Ariellys Velez netted a game-high 28 points for the Falcons, adding four rebounds and four assists.
The Mariners (2–17, 0–10 GNAC) return to action at Emmanuel College on Friday, February 13, at 6:30 p.m.
