LeMay Tabbed Goalie of the Year to Highlight Six LAX NECC Honorees
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Six members of the Mitchell College men's lacrosse team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday as the league announced its annual awards.
Junior JD LeMay was named NECC Goalie of the Year and was one of three all-conference first team selections for the Mariners. Joining him on the first team were senior Maximilian Crowley and freshman Jacob Setzko.
Sophomore Brian Jordan and freshman Owen LaPorte were both second team selections while senior Aaron Sladyk was named to the all-sportsmanship team. All awards were determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches.
LeMay earned top goalie honors for the third straight season and is a three-time first team selection. He started all 13 games and played every minute in the cage, finishing with 193 saves and a 9.42 goals-against average. His 56 saves in league play were tops in the NECC, and he also ranked second in goals-against average (6.00) and save percentage (.700) in four conference outings.
Crowley, a defender, becomes the first four-time all-conference first team pick in Mitchell men's lacrosse history. His 28 caused turnovers tied for the team lead and he ranked second with 52 ground balls. The four-year starter played in 58 career games and ranks as Mitchell's Division III leader in both ground balls (227) and caused turnovers (110).
Setzko enjoyed a stellar first season with the Mariners in which he played in 13 games while making one start. The rookie midfielder finished with 31 goals and 10 assists for 41 points, and in four league games he ranked second in the NECC in goals (12) and fourth in scoring (14).
LaPorte bolstered the Mitchell attack with 37 goals and 13 assists for 50 points. His season point total ranks as the second-highest in the school's Division III history, as well as the highest by a rookie. He recorded 11 goals and seven assists in league play to finish third in the conference in scoring.
Jordan earned all-conference status for the first time in his career. The second-year defender led the Mariners with 57 ground balls and tied with Crowley for the team lead in caused turnovers. In league action he ranked third in ground balls (23) and fifth in caused turnovers (8).
Sladyk played in 12 games and ranked sixth on the team in scoring with 14 goals and seven assists for 21 points. The four-year letterwinner finished with career totals of 43 goals and 28 assists for 71 points in 43 games.
Mitchell finished the season with a 5-8 record under first-year head coach Rich Petillo. The Mariners went 3-1 in league play and qualified for the 2016 NECC Championship as the second seed, falling in overtime to Becker College in the semifinals.
