Five-Goal Effort by Mahoney Not Enough in Loss to Dean
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Nathan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) tallied five goals to lead the Mitchell College men's lacrosse team, but the Mariners came up short in an 18–5 setback to Dean College in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) finale on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Mahoney's five goals were the most in a single game of his Mitchell career, and he has now tallied a team-high 19 goals on the season.
Dean seized control early, scoring five goals in the opening quarter to build a 5–1 lead. The Bulldogs added eight more in the second to take a 13–2 advantage into halftime.
Mitchell found some rhythm in the second half, with Mahoney accounting for all five goals for the Mariners. He finished with five goals on 12 shots, including eight on goal, while also collecting seven ground balls.
Freshman Killian Stvartak (Glen Burnie, Md.) and junior Declan Shea (Williston, Vt.) each recorded an assist, and freshman Evan Waite (Suffield, Conn.) added six shots. Defensively, junior Gregory Powell (Middletown, Conn.) picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers.
In goal, junior Cameron Haefs (Chicago, Ill.) made 20 saves while facing 38 shots on goal.
Dean was paced by Manny Alvarez-Segee, who totaled five goals and five assists, while Connor McCarthy added four goals and an assist and Nick Fernandez contributed three goals and three assists.
The Bulldogs held advantages in shots (58–21), ground balls (55–21), and faceoffs (22–5), controlling possession throughout the contest.
The Mariners (0-12, 0-11 GNAC) will close out their season on Thursday, April 23, with a non-conference matchup against MCLA at 3:00 p.m.
