NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team struck first but came up just short in a 2-1 setback against the University of Hartford on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mariners wasted no time grabbing the advantage as sophomore forward Jo'metrius Davis (Columbus, GA) netted his second goal of the season just 1:33 into the match. The quick strike put Mitchell in front, but Hartford responded midway through the half. Jack Merrill delivered the equalizer in the 17th minute to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the break.
The Hawks pulled ahead for good in the 58th minute when David Czubat found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Mitchell pressed for the tying score but was limited to just four shots on the day, including one on target.
Sophmore goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) kept the Mariners within striking distance with a nine-save effort, turning away several quality Hartford chances.
Hartford finished with a 22-4 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
With the result, Mitchell dropped to 1-3-0 on the season while Hartford improved to 2-0-1.
The Mariners (1-3-0, 0-0-0 GNAC) return to action on Saturday, September 13 when they host Wiles University at Alumni Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
