Men’s Soccer Sweeps Weekly GNAC Awards
WINTHROP, Mass. – Two members of the Mitchell College men's soccer team were honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for their performances over the past week, as the league announced its weekly awards on Monday afternoon.
For the first time in his collegiate career, sophomore forward Sean Khan (Wethersfield, Conn.) was named GNAC Player of the Week, while freshman goalkeeper Gabriel Tiene (Fairfield, Conn.) earned both GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week and GNAC Rookie of the Week honors — the first time he has received either award.
Khan delivered a dominant offensive week to lead the Mariners to back-to-back GNAC victories, totaling four goals and one assist across two matches. In the 3-1 win over Lasell on October 21, Khan scored twice — including the eventual game-winner — converting two of his four shots for a .500 shooting percentage. He followed that performance with another two-goal effort and an assist in a 4-0 shutout of Emmanuel on October 25, recording a perfect 5-for-5 in shots on goal. Over the two-game stretch, Khan averaged 2.0 goals, 0.5 assists, and 4.5 points per game, while maintaining a .444 shooting percentage and a .778 shots-on-goal rate.
Meanwhile, Tiene anchored Mitchell's defense with a standout performance in the victory over Emmanuel. The freshman recorded a perfect 11-save shutout, stopping every shot faced to post a 1.000 save percentage and a 0.00 goals-against average over the full 90 minutes.
The Mariners (3-13-1, 2-8-1 GNAC) will look to close out their season with a win when they travel to face Dean College in GNAC action on Wednesday, October 29, at 3:30 p.m.
