NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 non-conference decision to Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mariners erased an early deficit in the first half but couldn't keep pace with the Colonels after the break.
Wilkes struck first in the 5th minute on an unassisted tally from Elijah Emedoh-Kaba. Mitchell responded just past the half-hour mark when sophomore Oscar Mendoza-Soto (Willimantic, Conn.) netted his second goal of the season, finishing unassisted to pull the Mariners even at 1-1.
The Colonels (1-3-1 overall) regained control in the second half. Landon Kelly scored the eventual game-winner in the 50th minute off an assist from Will Wagstaff, and Kendall Heck added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute to extend the lead to 3-1.
Mitchell put nine shots on the board—including six on target—led by sophomore Gabe Ansani (Trumbull, Conn.) with three attempts and two on frame. Freshman goalkeeper Gabriel Tiene (Fairfield, Conn.) made five saves in the effort.
Wilkes finished with a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Mariners (1-4, 0-0 GNAC) return to action on Tuesday, September 16, when they travel to face UMass Dartmouth, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
