NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team struck first but couldn't hold off visiting Norwich University, falling 2-1 in a tightly contested Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Sophomore Jose Pacheco (New London, Conn.) gave the Mariners the lead in the 58th minute, finishing a pass from fellow sophomore Gabe Ansani (Trumbull, Conn.) to put Mitchell ahead 1-0. Norwich responded just four minutes later, then netted the game-winner in the 84th minute on an unassisted strike from Diego Fuentes.
Mitchell recorded 17 shots, including 7 on goal, with Pacheco, Ansani, and freshman Jo'metrius Davis (Columbus, Ga.) each tallying three attempts. Junior goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) made 6 saves, matched by Norwich's Kirk Rodgers, who also finished with 6 stops.
Norwich held a slight edge in total shots (23-17) and led in corner kicks (7-3). Mitchell maintained a 1-0 lead for over 20 minutes before the Cadets completed the comeback.
The Mariners (1-13-1, 0-8-1 GNAC) return to action at home on Tuesday, October 21, for a GNAC matchup against Lasell University at 3:00 p.m.
