WBB to Make NCAA Debut vs. #1 Christopher Newport
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team will take on top-ranked Christopher Newport University in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship on Friday, March 4 at Johns Hopkins University.
The Mariners (12-13 overall) will make their NCAA debut against the Captains, who enter the tournament ranked atop the latest D3hoops.com poll. Christopher Newport is unbeaten this season and holds a record of 24-0.
Mitchell earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship by winning the New England Collegiate Conference Championship. The Mariners, who were the tournament's third seed, upended second-seeded Eastern Nazarene College and top-seeded New England College en route to the title.
The Captains won the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship to earn their automatic bid. Christopher Newport is making its sixth consecutive NCAA appearance and 22nd overall.
Johns Hopkins will serve as host of the first and second rounds of the tournament, which begins Friday at Goldfarb Gymnasium in Baltimore, Md. The host Blue Jays (22-4) will face Mount Saint Mary College (23-3) in the other first-round game. The two first-round winners will meet on Saturday to battle for a spot in the Sweet 16.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for youth/senior citizens/Mitchell students. There will be no pre-sale to the general public; all tickets must be purchased at the gate, which opens one hour prior to the start of competition.
