Santos Repeats as NEWBA Weekly First-Team Selection
NORTHHAMPTON, Mass. – For the second consecutive week, Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) earned regional honors when she was named to the New England Women's Basketball Association's (NEWBA) Weekly First-Team on Tuesday afternoon.
She remains the lone Mitchell player to land on either the first or second team in the weekly selections by NEWBA this season. Each week during the regular season, the organization honors a player and rookie of the week from the region, and selects a five player first team along with a five player second team.
It was another dominant week for the senior forward despite the team posting an 0-2 record, as Santos averaged 30 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while logging all 40 minutes in each. She added 3.5 steals and 2.0 assists per contest, while shooting 55.8% from the floor and 75% from three-point territory.
Santos began the week by scoring 23 points on 47.4% (9-19) shooting against Salve Regina University, while adding seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Her performance helped the Mariners erase a 20-point second half deficit, however they came up just short, falling 74-70. She then turned her game up a notch as Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play began on Saturday, December 2nd, dropping a collegiate career-high 37 points against Lasell University, to go along with 10 rebounds, four steals, and two assists. The performance against the Lasers marked her fifth double-double in six games to begin the season, and the 37 points was the third most scored in a game in the Division III era of the Mitchell program.
Entering the new week, Santos leads the conference in scoring and rebounding, averaging 24.7 points and 13.7 rebounds per game, and is fourth with 2.7 steals per contest.
The Mariners (2-4, 0-1 GNAC) will return to play on Thursday, December 7th, when they host Bowdoin College in a non-conference matchup at 7:00 pm at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
