Santos Garners Regional & National Recognition with Dominant Play
NEW LONDON, Conn. – On the heels of being named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week for the second time this season, Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) also garnered regional and national recognition on Tuesday.
Santos, who is averaging 24.4 points and 12.8 rebounds per game this season, was one of five players named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. The popular web site, now in its 27th season, recognizes the top individual performances from across the country for the previous week. Santos was selected for the first time in her career and joins Amina Wiley (Class of 2023) as the second Mitchell player to ever receive the honor.
She also garnered Player of the Week honors from the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) joining Sam McKenna (Class of 2023) as the just the second player in program history to receive the honor. Each week during the regular season, the organization honors a player and rookie of the week from the region and selects a five-player first and second team.
Across two games last week, the senior forward averaged 37.5 points and 14 rebounds, while adding three assists and two steals, shooting 55.6% from the floor and 80.6% from the free throw line. Santos began the week with a 36 point, 15 rebounds performance against Albertus Magnus, also dishing out five assists and shooting 59.1% overall and 90.9% from the stripe. She then poured in a career-high 39 points to go along with 13 rebounds, three steals, one assist, and one block against Regis College. Santos shot at a 52.2% clip against the Pride and was 15-20 from the free-throw line.
Mitchell (2-11, 0-5 GNAC) will play next on Saturday, January 20th, on the road against Emmanuel College at 1:00 pm.
