Women’s Basketball Falls Short in Tournament Opener Against Albright
WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team clawed back from a slow start but couldn't topple Albright College on Friday night, falling 63–48 in the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Westfield State University.
Albright raced to a 22–9 first-quarter lead as Mitchell committed 10 early turnovers. The Mariners responded with their sharpest stretch of the game in the second quarter, sparked by sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas), who scored 8 of her team-high 15 points during a 20–10 run. Junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, Texas) added 9 points and 4 assists, while sophomore Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) helped trim the deficit to 32–29 at halftime.
But the momentum slipped away in the third, as Albright rebuilt a double-digit advantage, and although the Mariners pulled within eight, the Lions controlled the final minutes.
Freshman Delaney Fifield (Whately, Mass.) posted 8 points and 9 rebounds, and fellow freshman Ariahna Headen (Rogers, Conn.) added 6 points off the bench. Mitchell shot a solid 40.8% and held Albright to 1-for-13 from three, but the Lions capitalized on mistakes, scoring 28 points off 27 turnovers.
Albright was led by Gigi Serrano (13 points, 4 steals), Kenedy Cooper (14 points, 8 rebounds, 10-for-10 FT), and Chrisdin Jones (12 points, 6 rebounds), with the trio fueling the Lions' 40–20 edge in the paint.
The Mariners (1–4, 0–0 GNAC) will face Utica University in the consolation game of the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip-Off Tournament at 12:00 p.m.
