Women’s Basketball Ends Semester with Loss to Nichols
NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Mitchell College women's basketball team closed out the first semester with a 75-58 loss to Nichols College in a nonconference game Monday afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Both teams struggled offensively early. Mitchell sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, TX) scored the game's first basket just over two minutes in, and the Mariners held a 2-0 lead until Nichols tied it midway through the opening quarter. A free throw by senior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) gave Mitchell a 3-2 edge with 4:54 remaining, but a 3-pointer by Jaelize Rivera put the Bison ahead for good.
Beddoe led the Mariners with 16 points, knocking down five 3-pointers, and added five rebounds. Hypolite recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals. Junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) and freshman Ariahna Headen (Rogers, Conn.) scored eight points apiece, with Headen also pulling down eight rebounds.
Mitchell controlled the paint, outrebounding Nichols 35-29, but struggled shooting the ball, finishing at 33.9% from the field and 61.5% from the free-throw line.
Alyvia Smith led Nichols with 14 points, while Summer Klein added 12 points and Rylee Barrieault scored 11 as the Bison displayed a balanced offensive attack.
The Mariners (2-7, 0-0 GNAC) will break for the holidays before opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference play Saturday, Jan. 10, at Saint Joseph's College (ME).
