Women’s Basketball Defeated at Home by Blazers
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team battled on Saturday afternoon but was defeated by Elms College, 71–53, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
After a slow opening quarter, the Mariners responded with a strong second period, outscoring Elms 22–16 to pull within four at halftime. Mitchell made it a two-point game with 7:55 remaining in the third quarter, but the Blazers answered with a decisive 20–5 run to close the stanza and seize control.
Senior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) led Mitchell with 20 points, connecting on four three-pointers and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas) followed with 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists, attacking consistently and drawing contact at the rim. Junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, Texas) added her third straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, along with a pair of steals.
Defensively, Mitchell forced 16 Elms turnovers and recorded 10 steals, while senior Nanda Sanchez (Houston, Texas) anchored the paint with two blocks.
Elms was led offensively by Mary Turco, who finished with 20 points on an efficient 10-for-15 shooting, along with nine rebounds and three assists. Talia Uribe added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Malinna Figueroa chipped in eight points off the bench. Elms used balanced scoring and a 53–28 rebounding advantage to extend its lead in the second half.
The Mariners (2–10, 0–3 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they host the University of Saint Joseph in a conference clash on Tuesday, January 20, at 6:00 p.m.
