NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Wednesday afternoon, falling 6-0 to visiting Albertus Magnus College at Alumni Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ronnie Keays (Salem, N.H.) turned in a busy performance between the pipes for the Mariners, registering 17 saves while facing a Falcons attack that produced 48 total shots, including 23 on goal.
Mitchell's best chance of the afternoon came in the opening half when senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) fired the team's lone shot of the contest, but the attempt was kept off target. Despite the final score line, the Mariners battled throughout and limited Albertus Magnus to just two second-half goals after trailing 4-0 at the break.
Albertus Magnus (4-1, 1-0 GNAC) was led by Tyler Stocking, who netted a pair of goals, while Natalya Pennant, Taya Bagley, Stacey Casorla, and Ejalam Bravo each added tallies. Julia Tsakonas dished out two assists, and goalkeeper Amy Stevens earned the win in net. The Falcons built a 4-0 lead at halftime and added two more goals in the second half to close out the scoring.
The Mariners (1-1, 0-1 GNAC) will look to bounce back on Saturday, September 13, when they travel to Rivier University for another GNAC matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
