NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team got back on the winning track with a 3-0 victory over the City College of New York on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
In the opening half, Francesca Zamarripa notched the game-winning goal while Madison Nicynski added a goal and an assist. Elon Johnson tacked on an insurance goal in the waning minutes of the game for the final margin.
The Mitchell defense also turned in a solid effort, keeping the Beavers—who had scored a combined 15 goals in their three victories—off the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Gemma Landry finished with 17 saves en route to her second shutout of the season.
The Mariners got things rolling in the 21st minute after being awarded a free kick from just outside the top-right corner of the box. Nicynski put a shot on goal on the re-start, but CCNY keeper Rosario Baltazar jumped up to deflect the shot away. However, Zamarripa quickly deposited the loose ball into the right side of the goal for her second marker of the season.
Mitchell added to the lead in the 32nd minute off an Olimpico by Nicynski. The senior defender set up for a corner on the far side of the field, and her service ball sailed over the leap by Baltazar and curved inside the far post and into the side netting. The goal, her second of the year, gave the Mariners a 2-0 cushion heading into the halftime intermission.
CCNY continued to attack in the second half, attempting a total of 19 shots in the stanza. The Beavers' best scoring chance came with 18 minutes to play, as Cassidy Canberg drilled a shot that forced Landry into making a diving stop. The ensuing rebound ended up on the foot of MacKenzie Moreno, but with an open net she blasted her shot over the crossbar.
Johnson took all the pressure off in the 86th minute with her team-leading eighth goal of the season. She took a pass from Ileana Perez and sent a left-footed rocket underneath the dive of Baltazar for the final tally of the match.
CCNY finished the contest with a 35-8 edge in total shots. Baltazar made four saves.
Mitchell (3-5-1 overall) will next travel to Northern Vermont-Lyndon for a match on Wednesday, October 13 at 3 p.m.
