HENNIKER, N.H. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team put together a strong fight on the road Friday afternoon but came up short in a 4-2 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) setback to New England College at Don Melander Field.
The Pilgrims opened the match with two quick goals in the first nine minutes, including strikes from Madison Bowman and Estrella Michaelidis. Mitchell responded just before halftime when sophomore Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.) buried her first collegiate goal in the 45th minute, finishing off a feed from senior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the break.
After NEC restored a two-goal advantage early in the second half, the Mariners once again pushed back. In the 69th minute, senior Taylor Bialowas (Griswold, Conn.) converted a setup from fellow senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) to make it 3-2 and put Mitchell right back in contention.
However, the Pilgrims answered quickly with a goal from Mia Loewenberg just four minutes later to seal the match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ronnie Keays (Salem, N.H.) turned in a strong performance to keep the Mariners within reach, finishing with 12 saves against 31 shots.
Mitchell totaled nine shots in the contest, with Bialowas and Jennings combining for all three on target.
The Mariners (2-6, 0-6 GNAC) will close out their four-game road trip on Wednesday, October 8, when they face Regis College in a conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
