Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Monks in Season Opener
STANDISH, ME – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Saint Joseph's College (ME), 28–1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon at the SJC Athletic Complex.
Saint Joseph's built an early advantage, scoring 12 goals in the opening quarter and adding eight more in the second to take a 20–0 lead into halftime. The Monks controlled possession throughout, winning 31 of 32 faceoffs and holding a 55–5 edge in shots.
Mitchell broke through in the third quarter when freshman Graham Brown (Southlake, TX) scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore Nathan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) with 3:25 remaining in the period.
Junior goalkeeper Cameron Haefs (Chicago, Ill.) recorded 13 saves for the Mariners while facing 41 shots on goal over 60 minutes in net.
Mahoney led Mitchell with three shots and an assist, while Brown accounted for the Mariners' lone goal. Freshman Killian Stvartak (Glen Burnie, Md.) also recorded a shot on goal, and junior Gregory Powell (Middletown, Conn.) and freshman Jacob Johns (New Britain, Conn.) each picked up a ground ball.
Saint Joseph's was led by Brandon Cavicchi, who scored six goals and added two assists. Nicolas Michaud added five goals and two assists, while Maxwell Plunske finished with three goals and two assists for the Monks.
The Mariners (0–1, 0–1 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they return to the field on Saturday, March 21, at Lasell University.
