Blue Jays Pull Away Early in Win Over Men’s Lacrosse
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – A 12-goal opening quarter by the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) proved too much to overcome as the Mitchell College men's lacrosse team fell, 24–2, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday afternoon.
Saint Joseph seized control early, scoring 12 goals in the opening quarter to build a commanding lead. The Blue Jays added seven more in the second to take a 19–1 advantage into halftime, with sophomore Nathan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) accounting for Mitchell's lone first-half goal.
Saint Joseph continued to add to its lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Mariners 5–0 to extend the margin to 24–1 heading into the final period.
Mahoney added his second goal of the contest in the fourth quarter, finishing with both of Mitchell's goals on the day.
Mahoney led the Mariners with two goals on five shots, including four on goal. Junior Cameron Haefs (Chicago, Ill.) anchored the defensive effort with 16 saves while facing 40 shots on goal and added three ground balls. Freshman Evan Waite (Suffield, Conn.) and sophomore Graham Brown (Southlake, Texas) also registered shots for the Mariners, while Mahoney and junior Gregory Powell (Middletown, Conn.) scooped up three ground balls apiece.
Saint Joseph was paced by Brady Stevens, who finished with five goals and three assists, while Adam Pelletier and Freeman Johnson each added three goals.
The Blue Jays held advantages in shots (61–8), ground balls (56–16), and faceoffs (23–6), controlling possession throughout the contest.
The Mariners (0–10, 0–9 GNAC) will play their final road game of the season on Saturday, April 18, at Colby-Sawyer College in a GNAC matchup scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
