Strader Receives 2020 Alumni Excellence Award
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Mitchell College graduate Seth Strader was selected as the male recipient of the 2020 Alumni Excellence Award, as announced by the Department of Athletics on Wednesday afternoon during its virtual awards ceremony.
The Alumni Excellence Award is given annually to the man and woman graduates (seniors) recommended by the Department of Athletics who achieved the highest degree of competence in sports, while also attaining outstanding academic records.
Strader was a four-year letterwinner on the men's soccer team who majored in environmental studies. He played in 65 career games while making 58 starts—all in goal—while recording 297 saves, 26 wins and 10 shutouts. During his tenure he led the Mariners to four straight NECC postseason berths, including back-to-back title game appearances as well as the program's first-ever championship in 2017. A two-time all-conference and two-time all-tournament team selection, he finished his career as the school's all-time leader with more than 5,500 minutes logged in goal. He was named to the NECC Academic All-Conference Team in 2019 and was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma in 2020, and he graduated in May with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.53.
The 2020 Mitchell Athletics Banquet was canceled in May due to COVID-19. While the original goal was to reschedule the event before the end of the year, the decision was made to shift the award ceremony to a virtual setting for the safety of all involved. All award recipients were determined by a vote of the coaches and staff in the department
