NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team continued its early non-conference slate on Wednesday night, falling 5-0 to Coast Guard Academy at Nitchman Field.
The Mariners battled throughout the 90 minutes, with junior goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) turning in a strong effort in net. Jenkins recorded 13 saves against an aggressive Bears attack that generated 33 total shots, including 18 on goal.
Coast Guard jumped on the board in the 5th minute on a goal from Aidan Miles and carried the 1-0 lead into halftime. Mitchell responded with more pressure in the second half, producing all five of its shots after the break. Sophomore Diego Chavez (Meriden, Conn.) was active in the midfield, leading the team with three attempts including one on frame, while senior Stephen Contreras (Trumbull, Conn.) also tested the keeper with a shot on goal.
Despite the increased offensive push, the Bears pulled away with four second-half tallies, including scores in the 54th and 64th minutes that extended the deficit.
The Mariners (0-2, 0-2 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they return to action on Saturday, September 6, at home with a non-league tilt against Medgar Evers College.
